DRAWING

2017-2025

‘VICTOR’

This series of drawings is inspired by the 'great statues of victorious conquerors', which I see as reminders of egomaniacal greed and the insatiable hunger for loot. Their statues are all that remain of their existence, yet they're often revered and immortalized in history. We're even forced to learn their names in school as if they're worth remembering. My take on these memories is obvious – I depict them in my drawings as half-broken, often held together by 'external fixators'. It's a gentle way of asking the world: 'What was it all about?'

My focus of expression was held on Ink executed by the bamboo pen I specially created for my needs, brush and washes on unforgiving Japanese rice paper. This combination of tools and materials demand certainty with no room for error.
